BREED STANDARD.Brief summary: General Appearance: An active, graceful, well balanced dog. Absolutely fearless and sporting character and very gay and free in action. Head and Skull: Head almost flat between the ears, without dome. Stop shallow; length from base of stop to tip about one and one half inch. Nostrils should be well developed and the pigment black. Muzzle well tapered and to the point. Lips well covering but not hound like. Eyes: Large, dark and round, but not prominent. The eyes should be spaced well apart. Ears: Long and set high, with plenty of feathering. Mouth: Level. Neck: Should be well set on. Forequarters: Shoulders not too straight. Legs: Moderate bone, straight. Body: Should be short, coupled with plenty of spring of rib. Back level. Chest moderate, leaving ample heart room. Hindquarters: Legs; moderate bone, straight. Feet: Compact and well cushioned. Coat: Long, silky and free from curl. A slight wave is permissible. There should be plenty of feather. Tail: The docking of tails is optional. The length of the tail should be in balance with the body. Colour: Black and tan: raven blacka with tan markings, above eyes, on cheeks, inside ears, on chest and legs and underside of tail. Tan should be bright. Ruby: Whole-coloured rich red. Blenheim Rich chestnut markings, well broken up on a pearly white ground. The markings should be evenly divided on the head, leaving room between the ears for the much valued lozenge mark or spot, a unique characteristic of the breed.Tricolour: black and white, well spaced and broken up, with tan markings, over the eyes on cheeks, inside ear, inside legs and on underside of tail. Black and white permissible, but not desirable. Weight and Size: Weight: 10 - 18 pounds. A small, well balanced dog, well between these weights is desirable. |
