AFGHAN HOUND - HISTORY

That he was not a dog of the common man cannot be doubted since in those ancient times, only the upper classes were allowed to keep dogs.
In Afghanistan, the country of origin of this breed, the Afghan developed the coat that gives it so unique an appearance.
Like all breeds of its type, the Afghan hunts by sight, its highly developed vision finding the movement of its prey and then, through sheer speed of foot, it runs the game to ground or keeps it at bay.
This particular hound, by reason of its "pivotal hipjoints," is especially fast and adept in broken, boulder-strewn country,
hurdling formidable obstacles without slackening speed.
The Afghan is also fitted, by background and centuries of extreme climatic change, to be comfortable in any temperature.
This breed first appeared in north America in the 1930's and commanded immediate attention through its striking appearance.
