GENERAL INFORMATION - ALASKAN MALAMUTE.

Temperament:Is extremely loyal and intelligent, sweet and most affectionate toward it's master.

Behaviour with children: Good with older children.

With Other Pets: Typically Alaskan Malamutes are noted for NOT being good with small animals. While they can live with them with careful training and supervision, most cats, rabbits and rodents are NOT safe around a Malamute! Nor are livestock or wildlife. Predatory instinct in a Malamute over rides all training when anything small and furry runs!

Activity Level: High.

Obedience Ability: Firm handling and training are necessary. Proper socialization with people and other dogs is imperative. Obedience training is highly recommended.

Life Span: Approx. 12 - 15 Years - plus/minus.

Living Environment: Unsuitable for apartment living, requires at least a good back yard, well fenced with good base to prevent digging. Requires reasonable exercise and plenty of time with human family as human companionship is a necessity with this breed. Make sure dog is kept cool in hot weather or climate.

Health Issues: On the whole, a very healthy breed (apart from puppy mill breeding where new health hazards are appearing). Some are prone to hip dysplasia as are most breeds nowadays and some to chondrodysplasia (dwarfism).
