HISTORY -

AMERICAN COCKER SPANIEL

Brief Summary

The "merry Cocker" is one of the most popular purebreds in the world due to his small size, fine character, beauty, field ability and showmanship. An active, playful, intelligent dog, he is the smallest of the spaniels and his name was derived from his hunting ability on woodcock.

Actually, though an excellent gun dog, the Cocker's popularity grew out of his exceptional qualities as a pet and companion. Combine his bright adaptable, trustworthy, temperament with handy size and a wide range of colour, solid and parti-colour, the reason for this likeable little dog's popularity is easily recognized.

The Spaniels are among the world's oldest dog breeds, coming from ancient Spanish stock and borrowing their family name "Spaniel" from the country of their origin. Like all Spaniels of today, the Cocker has undergone many changes in type over the years.

Today, the Cocker Spaniel is, thanks to the early pioneers in this breed, one of the best known of purebred dogs. He can be solid black, any shade of tan from silver buff to deep red, black and tan, parti-coloured or tricoloured.

The Cocker can fill any bill, whether as a pet or a show dog. He may be small but he packs a lot of dog into his little busy frame.
