BORDER COLLIE - HISTORY .
Brief Summary
The Border Collie in type is truly ancient, brought to England by Caesar in his disastrous campaign on British soil. When the Roman troops withdrew they left, among other chattels, their camp dogs. They used sheepherding dogs close in type to the English Shephered and Border Collie as well as drover and guard dogs. The Border Collie is descended, like most true sheepherding breeds, from the Persian Sheepdog. It, or a breed like it, was probably the progenitor of the Collie and the Shetland Sheepdog. Although not considered to be or recognized as a true breed by many show conscious dog fanciers, they have been bred pure for centuries, not for show but for utilitarian purposes. As sheep-herding dogs they have no peers. As house dogs they are splendid, intelligent, quiet animals who will keep the children from danger just as they would the sheep in their flocks. The Border Collie made its appearance on the American continent at a very early date, brought over by the earliest English settlers to guard their flocks in the New World.
