HISTORY - LHASA APSO
Brief Summary
From beneath the shadows of towering Mount Everest in the land of the Abominable Snowman, ancient Lamas and monasteries, that mysterious country, Tibet, sent us Apso Seng Kye, the "Bark Lion Sentinel Dog," known to the western world as the Lhasa Apso.
The breeds native to that far away exotic country have two things in common, the heavy coat of hair that protects and insulates in a country of inter-changeable intense cold and heat, and the tail carriage, upturned and curled over the back. All four Tibetan breeds; the Mastiff, Spaniel, Terrier, Lhasa Apso, share this typical pair of characteristics.
While the fierce and powerful Tibetan Mastiff prevents intruders from entering the dwelling, the Lhaso Apso serves as a special guard within the house. Their intelligence, keen hearing and inbred discrimination make them particularly adept at this occupation.
Two beautiful specimens of the breed were imported to the USA from Asia as foundation animals. Today the breed is becoming increasingly popular and has spread to fanciers in Mexico as well as North America.
This is a hardy breed of dog, easily trained, very responsive to the ones they love and excellent watch dogs.
