Temperament: The Portuguese Water Dog is a water-loving, lively but sensible, and loyal dog, with a stable, highly intelligent temperament. Affectionate and fun to be around.

Behaviour with Children: Usually excellent with children.

Behaviour with other animals: As a rule gets along fine with other pets, but does need to have been socialized when younger to get to know cats.

Activity Level: A very active and energetic dog. Loves to swim, play or romp and makes a great jogging companion.

Obedience Ability: Not difficult to train. Get to understand your dog's character. Very sensitive to tone of voice.They are very intelligent so can out-think the owner but quick to learn (if you are consistent) and wanting to please.

Watchdogs: Good.

Expected Life Span: 10 - 14 years plus/minus.

Living Environment: Does require daily exercise both mental and physical. Moderately active indoors a back yard would be a good help. It is best suited living close to its humans and becoming one of the family.
