BREED HISTORY.
Brief Summary
This is a game, strong, sturdy terrier of heavy substance and low to the ground, in which was bred the ability to dig to unearth its quarry, in this instance, badger, otter and fox. The Sealyham derived its name from the place of its beginning in Haverfordwest, Wales, on the estate of Captain John Edwardes. Between the years 1850 and 1891 the Captain cannily merged many breeds, selecting and discarding and eliminating any dogs that showed the least sign of timidity and finally producing, a stablized and finished product, the breed known as the Sealyham Terrier. The good Captain engrossed in his breeding experiments, kept no records naming the breeds involved in the heritage of the Sealyham. We can only guess that the Bull Terrier, West Highland White, Dandie Dinmont and perhaps the Pembroke Corgi contributed to his being. The breed initially made its appearance on the show bench at Haverfordwest in 1903. The first breed club was founded in January, 1908 and drew up the oreiginal standard.
Many times has the Sealyham gone Best in Show in America, attesting to the perfection to which it has been brought by earnest breeders.
