Brief Summary
General Appearance: The Bouvier des Flandres is a rough coated dog of notably rugged appearance. He is a compact bodied, powerfully built dog of upstanding carriage and alert, intelligent expression.

Head: The head is medium long, with the skull slightly longer than the muzzle. Almost flat on top, moderately wide between the ears and sloping slightly toward the muzzle.The Brow is noticeably arched over the eyes.

Ears: Rough-coated, set high on the head and cropped to a triangular contour. They stand erect and are carried straight up.

Eyes:Neither protruding or sunken, but set a trifle obliquely in the skull and not too far apart. Medium size, very nearly oval. Preferred colour, a dark nut brown.

Neck: The neck is well rounded, slightly arched and carried almost upright.

Body: The brisket is deep, extending down at least to the point of the elbows and of moderate width. Back: Short, strong and straight.

Tail: Set high, carried up and docked to about 4 inches.

Legs and Feet:The leg bones, although only moderate in girth, are made to appear heavy because of their covering with thick, rough hair. Forelegs: Straight as viewed from the front or side, with elbows turned neither in nor out. Hind Legs: Hindquarters are firm and well muscled, with large, powers hams, legs are strong and sturdy, with hocks well let down and wide apart. They are slightly angulated at stifle and hock joints. Viewed from the back, they are absolutely parallel. Feet: Round, compact, with toes arched and close.

Coat: Rough, touselled and unkempt in appearance, the coat is capable of withstanding the hardest work in the most inclement weather. Topcoat: Harsh, rough and wiry and so thick that when separated by the hand the skin is hardly visible. Undercoat: Fine and soft in texture and thicker in winter.

Colour: From fawn to black; pepper and salt, gray and brindle. A white star on the chest is allowed.

Height: Dogs from 23 1/2 to 27 1/2 inches, bitches, a minimum of 22 3/4 inches.
